Robert D. “Bobby” Timmons, a stalwart figure in Alabama’s law enforcement community and long-serving Executive Director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association, passed away at the age of 91. Mr. Timmons’ remarkable career spanned decades, marked by dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the Office of Sheriff.
Beginning his tenure as Executive Director in 1975, Mr. Timmons held the position with distinction for 47 years, until his retirement in 2022. His influence extended far beyond administrative duties, as he was a beacon of guidance and support for sheriffs across the state. Prior to his influential role in the association, Mr. Timmons served the people of Alabama in the House of Representatives from 1970 to 1974 and was a Special Assistant to Jefferson County Sheriff Mel Bailey. His political acumen was further showcased as he traveled with George Wallace during his presidential campaign, later working closely with him on various legislative matters during Wallace’s governorship.
Appointed as Law Enforcement Liaison to Governor Don Siegelman from 1999 to 2003, Mr. Timmons’ expertise and dedication were instrumental in shaping law enforcement policies in Alabama. His legacy is one of passionate service and a deep-seated commitment to the law enforcement community.
